5 people who can make history in the 2021/2022 Award Season
Clint Eastwood
91 year old Clint Eastwood is starring, directing and producing his new film Cry Macho in the 2021/2022 Award Season. And if he is Oscar nominated he can become the oldest acting nominee and the oldest director nominee. In fact he can become the oldest nominee ever in any competitive category.
If his film wins Best Picture, Eastwood will also become the third person to win three Best Picture Oscars. It will tie him with Sam Spiegel (On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia) and Saul Zaentz (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus, The English Patient). If he wins Best Director it will be his third award in the category, which will tie him with William Wyler and Frank Capra for the second most awards in this category. John Ford still holds the record with four awards.
Amy Adams
If Amy Adams’ role in Dear Evan Hansen lands her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, it will be her sixth nomination in this category. This will tie her with Thelma Ritter for the most nominations in a supporting category for any actor or actress. Ritter never won an Oscar and so far Adams hasn’t managed to wins either.

Meryl Streep and Frances McDormand
Both actresses has won three acting Oscars and are one shy of the legendary Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn not only won four acting Oscars, but won them all in the leading actress category. Frances McDormand has three lead acting Oscars and if she can win for her role in Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, she will equal Hepburn in every way. McDormand also has a chance in the supporting category for her role in Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch, and if she manages to get nominations for both films she will be the eleventh person to receive two acting nominations in the same year. The last person to do this was Jamie Foxx in 2005 where he won for Ray and was nominated for Collateral.
Meryl Streep should always be considered when it comes to the Oscars. This year she plays the President in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, and if she manages to win an Oscar for that performance she will also tie with Hepburn, although Streep would then have two lead awards and two supporting.
Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg will be in the conversation for West Side Story, and if he can gain a Best Picture Oscar nomination, it will be his eleventh nomination in the category, which will put him two ahead of Scott Rudin in second place.
If Spielberg can get a Best Director nomination it will be his eighth, which will tie him in third place of most nominated in the category alongside Billy Wilder and one short of Scorsese. William Wyler is still far ahead with 12 nominations. William Wyler has the second most wins in the category with three. He is tied with Frank Capra, while John Ford leads with four. If Spielberg wins, he will tie with Wyler and Capra for second place.
